ARTIST STATEMENT

My current artwork focuses greatly on the past western bourgeois lifestyle, and so I make an effort to experience or curate environments of that nature. I will either host a tea party or a picnic, or will put together people, objects, and outfits to curate an environment akin to those of victorian era tea parties. I make an effort to capture these moments during the day when natural light shines the brightest and will later paint them at a medium to large scale. Through my artwork I seek to express an almost longing for a past lifestyle I’ve never been a part of. I want to create a serene environment and allow viewers to situate themselves in the space I’ve captured. My work is inspired greatly by the paintings of Mary Cassatt, the impressionist style of painting, and the Victorian era. Although the reasons and context of the imagery I paint differs from that of Cassatt and other women Victorian artists, I aim to express a contemporary experience to a past tradition.
